Why Lithium Batteries? PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 09 October 2008 14:17

SPOT uses lithium batteries for very important reasons, all of which are very important for proper operation of your SPOT. The SPOT device operates with Energizer 1.5V non-rechargeable size AA lithium batteries. Any other brand of AA lithium will be rechargeable and may be high voltage, which will damage the unit. The most important reason is that lithium batteries work over a wide operating temperature range allowing SPOT to work from -40C to +85C. Other battery types only work down to 0C. As well, lithium batteries store up to 2.5 times more energy than other batteries, are 33% lighter and have a shelf life of 10 years. However, in an emergency, alkaline batteries will function but provide limited performance and longevity.

Hi Bob, Wow, that certainly is unusual and outside of the specs. Basically, the
figure of 14 days was divided out from sending 1900 messages on a typical
battery lifespan. 14 days with 24 hours a day of tracking is a safe number to go
by and that's what we recommend.

Have fun out there and stay in touch.

I used the tracking mode for about 60 days on a trip from Fl to Ca. and back.
Had the unit on for 8 to 10 hrs a day and the battries are still good. The info
that came with the device states battery life is about 14 days. Is my experience
unusual?
Brian Blazey   |2008-12-17 04:26:15
I have used my Spot a few time to send test messages but have not left the unit
on for any length of time. How will I know it is time to change the batteries
to have a long transmission time if & when I really need it?
Admin   |2008-12-18 02:21:41
Hi Brian, the on/off light will blink red as a low indicator light. At that
point, about 30% of the battery power is left.

Thanks!

Admin: Here in California ALL batteries are recomended to be recycled. Lucky
for us almost every business that sells them also takes them in for recycling.
Admin   |2008-12-18 02:18:43
Thanks Rick for the feedback!

Hi Tommy, the batteries can be treated like regular household batteries, so they
are safe to dispose of in the trash.
Thanks!
Joel Guenther   |2008-12-23 02:54:23
In CA, and other places, it is *illegal* to dispose of batteries in the normal
trash stream.

For environmental reasons, they must be handled as the toxic
waste that they, in fact, are.

Great question Janis! You don't have to take out the batteries when storing
SPOT. The lithium batteries will not leak or corrode over a reasonable time
period. Thanks again for the question.
Tommy Bowen   |2008-11-20 04:28:49
Are the batteries recycleable? Can they be thrown away in the regular trash?
Janis   |2008-11-20 04:26:20
When storing SPOT for long term (i.e., over 3 months), should I take out the
batteries?
Joshua   |2008-10-24 04:51:35
I have to say that I'm very impressed with the battery life. I am still on the
original set of batteries. I completed a cross country bicycle trip with Spot
in the tracking mode everyday from about 0700 to 1700 (40 days). It still isn't
indicating that the batteries are low yet. Great design.

Purchased my SPOT for a British Columbia moose and bear hunting trip. Glad I
did because the guide had no communication system that would reach the outback.
Being a recovering heart attack patient communication is important to me.
I live
on a farm and am now taking my SPOT with me into the field for, of course,
communication purposes.
Should have purchased one for this primary purpose and
let the hunting trip be the secondary reason. Thanks SPOT

FAQ states that batteries are good for 14 days of tracking. Is there any
indication that the batteries need replacement, for those of us who don't keep
track of how long we've used the unit?
Admin   |2008-10-22 07:38:07
Great question Norm, when batteries are low, the on/off button will blink red
meaning that there are only 48 hours left.
